Petition to the Government of Canada

    WHEREAS:
There is a growing number of reports of Canadian children being exposed to online sextortion and other serious harm due to unfiltered access to platforms that directly or indirectly subject children to sexually explicit material and the risk of being targeted by online child predators; and
Parliamentarians in both the House of Commons and the Senate have addressed this issue, including the House of Commons Standing Committee onHealth, which in 2017 reported that the Committee was told that more help was needed for parents to protect their children from unwanted exposure to sexually explicit content and that witnesses suggested that technology companies develop better filters for online content and better parental controls to protect children when they go online.
WE, THE UNDERSIGNED, citizens and residents of Canada, call upon the Government of Canada to:
Immediately introduce comprehensive legislation on the issue of online harm to children that will help parents and guardians protect children from online predators and unwanted exposure to sexually explicit material, as well as hold technology companies accountable for ensuring that any online platform accessible to children is safe for children.
